South Australia Stands with Nepal

On Saturday evening we came together at Oaklands Park for a candlelight vigil following the devastating floods and landslides in Nepal.

South Australia is home to a strong and vibrant Nepali community, and we have one of the largest Nepali communities in our state here in the electorate of Elder.

At the vigil I announced the Malinauskas Labor Government is providing $200,000 to UNICEF Australia’s humanitarian response in Nepal.

The funding will support UNICEF’s work with the Government of Nepal and local partners, helping provide emergency health care, lifesaving nutrition, safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene supplies to children and families affected by the disaster.

On Thursday, members of South Australia’s Nepali and Tibetan communities joined us at Parliament House to hear the Premier move a motion recognising the tragedy. The Hon Peter Malinauskas MP moved the this house:

(a) notes the devastating floods and landslide that struck Nepal and neighbouring areas of Tibet, China, on 26 August 2026;

(b) extends its deepest condolences to all those who have lost loved ones or remain awaiting news of family and friends who are still missing;

(c) thanks the first responders, emergency services, humanitarian workers and volunteers undertaking extraordinary rescue and recovery efforts in extremely difficult conditions; and

(d) acknowledges the humanitarian assistance provided by the Australian and South Australian governments to support communities affected by the disaster.
