Reducing Congestion and Making our Roads Safer
The Malinauskas Labor Government is building a safer and better connected Adelaide by delivering record investments in roads, rail and public transport. Since coming to government we have made public transport free for seniors around the clock and reduced student 30-day MetroCARD passes to just $10!
Main construction on the Torrens to Darlington Project - the largest and most complex infrastructure project in our state’s history - is now underway. Once complete, the non-stop South Road will allow motorists to bypass 21 sets of traffic lights between the River Torrens and Darlington, saving up to 40 minutes of travel time in peak hour traffic.
This is an enormous project for our state, and for our local community, with South Road splitting the electorate of Elder, and the southern precinct - the launch location of two of the three tunnel boring machines for the project - is located in Clovelly Park. Even prior to my election, I have consistently advocated for this project to also benefit our community by reducing rat running and congestion on our local roads.
Our electorate is also home to a number of other important state-maintained roads which I have been a steadfast advocate for improving in the interest of our local community.
The Edwardstown Primary School Crossing on Edward Street has consistently been raised with me as a worrying location by members of the school community and nearby residents.
As a local road, Edward Street is under the care and responsibility of the City of Mitcham, so I have been advocating to Council to see this crossing upgraded. I have also written to the former Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and the Minister responsible for Road Safety. After years of listening to local residents and the school community and advocating on their behalf, I am incredibly proud to share we have secured funding to upgrade this crossing to a Pedestrian Actuated Crossing!
The new crossing will include traffic lights with countdown for crossing timers, pedestrian ramps, safety fencing, line marking and audible push buttons. Once complete, we’ll also be introducing the new 40km/h time-based school speed limits in line with similar changes to Goodwood Road and Cross Road.
During the 2022 State Election, I promised that if elected, a Malinauskas Labor Government would produce a report on Springbank Road.
In February 2023, we delivered on that promise with the publication of the Springbank Road Traffic Study and Access Report. This report was published for community consultation, with public meetings held throughout 2023. Following extensive consultation and investigation, the Department for Infrastructure and Transport recommended the installation of a pedestrian actuated (push button) crossing (PAC) on Springbank Road between Eliza Place and Daniels Road.
One of the more popular alternative proposals was installing a full set of traffic lights at the intersection of Eliza Place and Springbank Road. The Department advised against this for a number of reasons, including that it would likely require land acquisition and would be in excess of ten times the cost of a PAC (in the tens of millions rather than millions). The Department was also concerned that while traffic lights at this location may encourage less motorists to use Springbank Road, those motorists would then be diverted to smaller local roads throughout Colonel Light Gardens and Panorama - particularly Eliza Place.
Following extensive advocacy and community support, we secured funding for the Springbank Road PAC - going above and beyond our initial election commitment - with the new crossing installed in November 2025.
As a candidate back in 2021, I wrote to the then Minister for Infrastructure and Transport on behalf of our community requesting the installation of a green right hand turn from Edward Street onto South Road - unfortunately I never received a response.
Since then I have continued advocating and was incredibly pleased to secure funding and support for the Raglan Avenue, Edward Street and South Road Network Upgrade - which will see in the installation of a green arrow from Edward Street onto South Road, in addition to the construction of a new link road to remove the ‘dogleg’ movement for traffic travelling between Edward Street and Raglan Avenue. You can read more about the project here.
Construction is currently underway and the project is expected to be completed late 2026.
Throughout 2024 and 2025, we made a number of upgrades to the Clarence Park Railway Station.
This work included a new accessible ramp, pedestrian safety gates, a mural with artwork from local children and a resurfaced platform.
These upgrades delivered on an commitment Jayne Stinson MP and I took to the 2022 State Election.
At the 2022 State Election, we promised that a Malinauskas Labor Government would not undertake any projects that would lead to Cross Road becoming a freight corridor.
We remain committed to that promise and the 2025/26 State Budget included funding for the High Productivity Vehicle Network - which includes upgrades to the Greater Adelaide Freight Bypass and other parts of the existing freight network to divert heavy vehicles away from metropolitan Adelaide roads.
In 2024 after writing to then then Minister for Road Safety on behalf of concerned local residents, we installed safety reminder signs for motorists at the intersection of Cross Road and Goodwood Road.
