More Homes for More South Australians

Whether you want a suburban family home with a big backyard, or an apartment close to the city, the Malinauskas Labor Government is taking action to make housing more accessible and affordable for all South Australians.

We’re delivering the first substantial increase to public housing in a generation, by building 1,090 new public homes by early 2026 and stopping the proposed sell-off of 580 Housing Trust homes. We’ve also completed major works on 350 vacant homes to make them available for families in need.

We’ve completed the biggest ever land release in South Australia of over 25,000 new housing allotments, and are investing $1.5 billion in water and sewer infrastructure to support new homes.

We’re assisting long-term renters and key workers to break into the property market with our rent-to-buy initiative, giving tenants the first right to purchase the home at a fixed price. These homes are also rented at 75% of market rate.

And we’ve provided more support for first home buyers, abolishing stamp duty for eligible first home buyers in eligible new homes, extending the First Home Owner Grant and introduced 2% deposits through HomeStart.

The Malinauskas Labor Government has made the biggest overhaul to our state’s rental laws in a generation. Our reforms include:

  • Allowing tenants to have pets in rental homes with reasonable conditions

  • Providing Private Rental Assistance to more South Australians, delivering up to $4,800 in additional support per household

  • Making residential tenancy bonds more affordable, saving a renter of a median priced house in Adelaide $930 in upfront payments

  • Banning rent bidding

  • Protecting tenants’ rights and information

  • Introducing prescribed grounds to terminate or not renew a tenancy

  • Extending the notice period to end a tenancy from 28 days to 60 days

  • Ensuring rental properties comply with minimum housing standards

  • Providing additional support for victims of domestic violence

  • Supporting a new tenant advocacy service
